1950s vintage comic postcard "A Coupla Stinkers" got there before you did!

This hillbilly humor outhouse postcard has everything silly that you can imagine... a sly skunk stands on a welcome mat, greeting a startled, striped pajama-wearing gent. There is no door on the privy, but flowers bloom along the outside to combat the stink. An anthropomorphic moon face smirks gleefully from above - as if someone orchestrated the entire farce.

The artist Ray Walters for C.T. Rural Relief illustrates this silly outhouse potty humor. Walters was perhaps the most popular cartoon postcard artist of the twentieth century. In the early to mid-20th century, the company also created “hillbilly” themed postcards. These often depicted exaggerated and stereotypical images of Appalachian life, such as moonshine stills, rustic cabins, and outhouses. Despite their controversial nature, these postcards were popular and helped attract tourists, bringing much-needed economic benefits to the area, which was struggling with poverty and economic depression at the time.

This postcard offers a glimpse into the cultural attitudes and marketing strategies of the era, reflecting both the charm and challenges of promoting a region through imagery that could be both endearing and problematic. In postwar America, silly cards like these were collected for the guaranteed belly laughs they would provide. This would look great framed for bathroom decor, a man cave, or a hunting cabin, or make a nice addition to any collection.
