1930s vintage pie-eyed leather American Folk Art Dachshund brooch has hand-painted features. Made from a kiln-fired clay sculpture covered in kid leather. C-hook clasp. 40 x 19 mm.
Many soldiers returning home after WW1 brought Dachshunds home from Germany as pets. In 1923, only 23 Dachshunds were registered with AKC, but by the end of the 1930s registrations had climbed to over 3,000 a year. This popularity most certainly inspired the making of this darling Dachshund folk art brooch. During the 1920s and 1930s, animated characters were sometimes drawn with black eyes or pupils shaped like a pie with one slice removed, as seen on this darling pup.
