This 1940s vintage wartime slip is made from pale yellow wool, featuring the iconic Indera "Figurfit" knit design. The slip has a fitted tank-style bodice with reinforced neckline and arms, and a drop waist with a fuller skirt.
The Indera Knitting Company, founded in 1914, was known for its patented knitting process. Their first products were wool knit slips for women and girls, sold under the "ColdPruf" label. During World War II, the company introduced the "Figurfit" design to meet the changing fashion needs shaped by fabric rations and the increasing number of women joining the workforce and taking on active volunteer roles. These wool knit slips became especially popular in the winter due to wool's natural insulating properties, which trap heat and keep you warm. The material also wicks moisture away from the skin, ensuring comfort and warmth even in colder weather.
Label: The label is missing, but this is an Indera Figurfit slip.
Modern size equivalent: X-Small to Small
Measurements are taken flat, unstretched, and doubled where appropriate:
Bust: 30"
Waist: 30"
Total length: 40"
Side length (armpit to hem): 33"
Sweep/Hem: 50"
Care instructions: To properly wash this wool knit slip, fill a basin with cool water and a wool-friendly detergent. Gently hand agitate the fabric and soak for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with cool water. After washing, press out excess water (do not ring) between towels and lay flat to air dry, reshaping as needed. Avoid direct sunlight and heat.
Condition: Signs of wear include some small stains and periodic moth holes. The drawstring at the neckline is missing, though there is an insertion hole on the inside neckline at the center where it once was. A home seamstress added a length extender at the bottom, which was common during the period, to adjust the fit. It can be removed if preferred. Please see the images.
While the wool material is excellent for insulation, it is a bit scratchy. To ensure comfort, it would have been worn with a cotton or rayon step-in or chemise underneath. Despite its wear, this slip remains a charming piece of vintage fashion, offering both historical appeal for collectors and a touch of everyday practicality for the vintage fashionista.
