1940 WW2 Marines City Hall Milwaukee Wisconsin
1940 vintage postcard. The World War 2 "Enlist in the US Famous Marines" recruitment slogan is seen on the front of Milwaukee City Hall. Constructed in 1895 at the peak of the Progressive Era in America, Milwaukee City Hall held the title of the city’s tallest building for almost 80 years, symbolizing civic pride and virtue.
In front of City Hall is a statue of Henry Bergh standing at the center of a water fountain. The statue was unveiled on April 29, 1891, shortly after the 25th anniversary of Bergh’s founding of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). It was originally placed atop an animal watering trough in downtown Milwaukee’s Market Square, near the present City Hall.
The statue remained in Market Square until 1941, when it was decided to convert the fountain, which served as a watering trough for horses, into a flower bed due to the decline in the use of horses. The statue was then moved to the Wisconsin Humane Society, where it still stands today.
Next door is the Jung Building and a bit in the distance is the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company building. This beautiful vintage linen lithograph postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
