A 1904 to 1905 vintage postcard off the Galveston Texas Seawall view from the beach.

3 miles long solid concrete, 16 ft high, 16 ft base, 5 ft top, 27 ft riprap in front. The Galveston Seawall is a seawall in Galveston, Texas, built after the Galveston hurricane of 1900 for protection from future hurricanes. Construction began in September 1902, and the initial segment was completed on July 29, 1904.

On the back:"Carl- This is the big wall they are building, so if the gulf gets on another tear, it won't be able to wash the city away."

Clark & Courts, Publishers, Galveston - Why it matters to this card's history in particular:
Traveling salesmen for Clarke and Courts marketed its products throughout Texas, western Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mexico. In 1887, when the company won a blue ribbon at the Texas State Fair, it incorporated as Clarke and Courts. By 1890, the firm had completed its office on the Strand in Galveston, as well as a plant and warehouse.

In 1902, the firm subscribed $5,000 for seawall bonds to protect the city after the devastation of the Galveston hurricane of 1900, which damaged the company's building and killed its head bookkeeper. Clarke and Courts printed the first newspapers after the disaster.
