This rare 1909 vintage postcard features the iconic gates of Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. The gates are flanked by stately stone pillars adorned with intricate details. The postcard captures a serene moment, with a tranquil road leading through the gates into the lush, tree-lined campus.
In the distance, the historic Heavilon Hall with its distinctive tower rises above the treetops. Originally dedicated in January 1894, the building tragically burned down just four days later. It was quickly rebuilt, and the new structure was completed in 1895. The rebuilt Heavilon Hall was notable for its iconic clock tower.
The building was expanded in 1921 and renamed Heavilon Hall in 1930. Unfortunately, the clock tower and the front portion of the building were demolished in 1956 to make way for the present-day Heavilon Hall. The remaining parts of the original structure were eventually torn down in 1969 to make room for the Herbert C. Brown Laboratory of Chemistry.
This postcard captures the grandeur of Purdue’s entrance and offers a glimpse of Heavilon Hall’s storied past, reflecting the university’s resilience and dedication to progress.
