1907 Saint Mary's Chapel & Gymnasium Indiana
1907 vintage postcard of Saint Mary's Academy chapel and gymnasium. In 1843 four Sisters of the Holy Cross ventured from Le Mans, France, to the wilderness of northern Indiana. Shortly after, they opened a boarding school for young women in Bertrand, just north of the Michigan state line from South Bend.
This is an early real photograph postcard of the Chapel and gymnasium pictured the year before it became independent of Notre Dame. In 1908 the school officially became Saint Mary’s College.
