This rare RPPC postcard is postmarked "IRON MOUNTAIN MICH, Sept 8, 1945"Pine Mountain Ski Slide, the highest artificial slide in the U.S." Shows workers managing the snow load on the original jump. It was first constructed in the late 1930s. The slide was first modified in 1948 when the outrun was dug out, so this postcard predates the first change in the slide.

It was built by the Kiwanis Ski Club and quickly gained a reputation as one of the highest man-made ski jumps in the world. The slide has been a central part of the local community, hosting numerous ski jumping events and attracting athletes from around the globe.

Over the years, Pine Mountain has seen many record-breaking jumps. It holds the U.S. record for the longest jump in World Cup competition at 140 meters (459 feet) and an overall distance record of 144 meters (472.44 feet). The annual FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup competitions held here are a major highlight, drawing large crowds and showcasing top-tier ski jumping talent.

The facility’s impressive height and challenging jump have made it a significant landmark in the world of ski jumping, contributing to the sport’s history and development. Pine Mountain continues to be a beloved venue for both athletes and spectators, preserving its legacy as a premier ski jumping destination.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
