A rare 1907 postcard featuring the historic Southern Minnesota Normal College in Austin, Minnesota. This institution, which operated from 1897 to 1925, served as both a normal school and business school, founded alongside the Austin School of Commerce.

Normal colleges, also known as normal schools, were institutions created to train teachers by educating them in the norms of pedagogy and curriculum. The term “normal” comes from the French phrase “école normale,” which means a school intended to serve as a model for other schools. These schools were established to standardize teacher training and improve the quality of education.

The school was founded in 1896 by Charles Boostrom and opened the following year. In 1913 the school began advertising itself as the University of Southern Minnesota to compete with the teacher's colleges in Mankato and Winona. It focused almost entirely on preparatory education in courses such as auto-mechanics and stenography. The school closed in 1925 due to financial difficulty caused as a result of declining enrollment.

The building showcases late Victorian architectural elements, including an imposing central tower with a spire, symmetrical windows, and robust masonry construction typical of turn-of-the-century academic architecture.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
