The Life and Work of Birket Foster by H. M. Cundall 1986
An accident with a corkscrew at the family business convinced Myles Birket Foster's father that his son was better off pursuing an artistic career. Through his father's north country connections, Birket Foster was apprenticed to Ebenezer Landells in London. Landells was an extraordinary man. A former apprentice of Thomas Bewick, he had come to London from Newcastle and ran an engraving business, his chief claim to fame being that he founded the political satire magazine, Punch. Under Landells, Foster became friends with many of the leading line artists of his day, including Edmund Evans and Kate Greenaway. Birket Foster remains one of the most popular and sought-after Victorian artists.
