A 19th c. tapestry table runner attributed to Aubusson, France.
Aubusson is a town in France that became renowned for producing fine woolen tapestries, which included a range of decorative items such as table runners, rugs, and wall hangings. While the 17th and 18th centuries saw the height of the Aubusson tapestry industry, the 19th century continued the tradition, though the design styles evolved with the changing tastes of the time.
During the 1800s, particularly in the early to mid-century, Aubusson weavers were influenced by neoclassical and romantic styles, incorporating floral patterns in their works. Wool was the primary material in these textiles, and the craftsmanship was highly valued. Table runners, being smaller and more utilitarian than full tapestries, were a form of decorative textile during this period, woven with the same meticulous techniques used for more enormous tapestries.
