1800s. Set of six antique linen Casting Dorset buttons measures approximately 13 lignes, 8.2 mm., or 5/16 inches. Buttons were originally reserved for the wealthy until the 1600s when cottage industry Dorset buttons were added to the lacemaker's work orders. Women and girls would work by candlelight late into the night to earn extra money for their families.
