1909 Ethnographic Moorish Woman

Hand-dated 1909 vintage real photo postcard. Antique ethnographic postcard "Belle Mauresque" (Beautiful Moorish Woman). In the early 20th century, photographers arrived in Africa alongside colonial administrators, missionaries, adventurers, and fortune hunters. They captured ethnographic photographs that featured the exotic and unfamiliar, introducing new cultures to the Western world.

This woman's bared breasts were shown because the Islamic traditions of Northern Africa believed that the private parts of women coincided with the private parts of men - that is from the navel to the knees. Breasts and chests were not considered private. This card would look great framed and make an excellent addition to any collection.
