This antique postcard is a stunning historic link to South Bend's historic glory. Constructed in 1908, The Oliver Hotel stood as a testament to early modern American luxury and architectural design. Boasting an impressive façade that reflects the grandiose aspirations of its era, this establishment was once heralded as “The Best and Most Magnificent Hotel in Indiana,” distinguishing itself not only on a state level but also as one of the finest hotels in the World.

The hotel was designed by the architectural firm Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, with interior decor by Marshall Field & Co. of Chicago. It was known as the most beautifully decorated building west of New York. The Oliver Hotel was a central part of South Bend’s social and cultural life, hosting numerous events and dignitaries. The Oliver Hotel’s historical significance lies not just in its luxurious accommodations but also in its embodiment of early 20th-century optimism and prosperity. Architecturally, it represents an era when attention to detail and grandeur were paramount.

In 1950, the Pick Hotels chain purchased the hotel, and in 1957 it was renamed the Oliver-Pick Hotel. The hotel closed in 1967 and was subsequently demolished. It was replaced by the 25-story Valley American Bank Building, now known as the Chase Towers.

The Oliver Hotel remains an integral piece of South Bend’s architectural heritage, remembered for its grandeur and the role it played in the city’s history. This postcard serves as a tangible link to that storied past, capturing a moment in time when the hotel stood as a symbol of luxury and elegance.
