1944 County Courthouse in Manitowoc Wisconsin
A vintage linen postcard of the Court House in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Postmarked: 1944.
The Manitowoc County Courthouse, located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is a notable example of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical architecture. The current courthouse, built between 1905 and 1907, is the third courthouse to serve the county. The first courthouse, a wooden structure built in 1839, was destroyed by fire in 1852. The second courthouse, a brick building constructed in 1857, was eventually replaced due to space constraints.
Designed by German-born architect Christ H. Tegen, the present courthouse features a three-story stone structure with gray Indiana Limestone and red sandstone foundations. The building’s exterior includes Ionic columns and a substantial square drum supporting an octagonal dome, originally made of copper and glass but later rebuilt with stainless steel after storm damage in 1950.
Inside, the courthouse boasts a large square lobby with classical columns, marble wainscoting, and ornamental cast metal balustrades. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and the State Register of Historic Places in 1989 for its architectural significance.
