The Art Nouveau movement reached its peak in the years between 1890 and 1914. By a lucky coincidence, the colour picture postcard emerged as a new art form in the same period, and artists working in the Art Nouveau style were quick to see an exciting opportunity. They successfully optimized the new medium to popularize their work and their stylistic philosophy. Millions of postcards, decorated, adorned, painted and enamelled, and each with its own particular message of love, satire, fashion, protest and war, were created by the Art Nouveau artists of the period.
Here, for the first time, is a book that examines systematically and critically this important development. Art Nouveau Postcards reflects the spectrum of Art Nouveau imagery, and at the same time traces the movement's evolution throughout Europe, the United States and Japan.
Significant Art Nouveau artists of the period are fully represented. Over 750 superb colour reproductions feature the work of more than 500 artists, including Berthon, Czeschka, Crane, De Feure, Gibson, Grasset, Hoffman, Kirchner, Meunier, Moser, Mucha, Rassenfosse, Stiefel and Terzi. It includes a biographical dictionary of the artists, together with a list of the publishers of their postcards, a bibliography and a comprehensive index.
