A coveted V-Ette Whirlpool bra by Hollywood-Maxwell.
Hollywood-Maxwell was the first Californian brassiere manufacturer to enter the American market in 1929. In the 1930s, Hollywood was a place of glamour and inspiration, and it wasn’t long before the American woman’s desire for a movie star look boosted the sale of the company's latest bra innovations. Hollywood-Maxwell claimed that its products were used exclusively by Paramount movie stars.
Hollywood-Maxwell founder Joseph R. Bowen patented a cup stabilization technique called Whirlpool stitching in 1935, marking the birth of the infamous "circle stitch" cup. This much-imitated innovation used concentric rings of stitches to produce a rounded shape in the 1930s and a more pointed cup in the 1940s and 1950s. The label on this bra dates it to 1950.
Tagged a 34A, but this is not accurate to the actual measurements:
Modern Size: 28B
Approximate measurements:
Band: Maximum 28 inches
The bust measures plus two inches of band length - 30 inches of fullness
Overdyed in a pale eggplant purple to disguise hard water stains. Any dusty white shadowing is from it being freshly laundered with liquid starch, a result that will vanish with wear and future laundering. There is not a lot of stretch left in the elastic, as is common with vintage elastics. Mends, darns, or other signs of wear or repair related to this piece may exist. Hand wash separately in warm water; line drying will best suit the longevity of this vintage foundation.
