The Secret History of Procopius Translated by Richard Atwater 1992
"You see, it was not possible, during the life of certain persons, to write the truth of what they did, as a historian should... These secrets it is now my duty to tell and reveal ..."
Accompanying the Roman general Belisarius in Emperor Justinian's wars, Procopius became the principal Roman historian of the 6th century. Procopius of Caesarea wrote eight books on the wars prosecuted by Justinian. However, this manuscript remained unpublished until 1623. When one reads the content we understand why.
In this "history without scruple", Emperor Justinian is described as a greedy genocidal leader. His wife is portrayed as a scheming whore - taking off her clothes in public crowds and having sex with whomever was willing. If Procopius had made public his writings, he most certainly would have been tortured and put to death.
