1800s. Set of six antique linen Casting Dorset buttons measures approximately 13 lignes, 8.2 mm., or 5/16 inches. These gorgeous craft-made buttons originated from Dorset, England with a unique pattern known as a Casting needlework button. Buttons were originally reserved for the wealthy until the 1600s when cottage industry Dorset buttons were added to the lacemaker's work orders. Women and girls would work by candlelight late into the night to earn money for their families.
