1909 Stagecoach Robbery Lewiston Idaho
1909 vintage postcard. Following the decline in overland travel by stagecoach after the establishment of the transcontinental railroad, the economy of many towns was suffering. In an attempt to bring back tourists/travelers, small towns came up with the "stagecoach hold-up experience".
Visitors would pay for a short ride by stagecoach and to be "held up" by actors pretending to be bandits. Picture postcards were made to document the "robbery" and sold to the participants. It served a momento, and as advertising for the towns as the cards traveled out across the country. This is one of those cards.
